Websters Dictionary states: “History is a written account of what has or might have happened” Therefore family History may be defined as a systematic account of the development of a family, usually in chronological order, with analysis and explanations. In Analyzing, correlating and explaining of past events, the family historians usually make their own judgments of past events and also make certain assumptions, which may be justified.
Great Forefather – Kuruvilla Appoppan
It is believed that Kuruvilla Appoopan was born on a day in 1790 AD. His descendents in the Ellickal, Thazhackal, Thazhackamattom and Pittathankal families always remember and describe with pride the real story of Mylapoor Theerthadanam. Kuruvilla Appoopan was a pious gentleman. He used to go regularly to his parish church at Cherpunckal (Holy Cross Church) where his cousin Rev. Fr. Abraham Moolamundayil was the Vicar for a long time. He also used to visit Alunkal Karottu tharavadu to meet his relations.He arranged marriages for his sons & daughters from reputed families, in time.
Kuruvilla Appoopan was also a good farmer. He had a good ‘naadan pistol’ and nayattu was his hobby. One day, while on nayattu, unknowingly he shooted a cow nearing delivery. The cow died immediately. Appoopan repented much as unnecessary killing was against the 5th commandment. Therefore he decided to go for ‘Mylapoor Theerthadanam’ and do thapas at the Mylapoor Hill where St. Thomas was killed . Rev. Fr.Joseph Illickal was born on 07-01-1908 as second son (3rdchild) of Avirah Avirah (Peelee Mappilla), Illickal Vadakkeputhuvayalil (Poovathunkal). His school education was completed mostly at Vilakkumadam and Bharanaganam. Further he joined and passed the Intermediate course at St. Berkman’s College, Changanacherry. In 1929 he joined the Minor Seminary at Changanacherry as an aspirant for priesthood. In 1930 he was sent to the Major Seminary in Cylon. On 23rd December 1937 he was ordained as a priest.
In January 1938 he was appointed as the assistant Vicar at The Theekoy Catholic Church. In the same post he also served at Anickadu St.Marys Church and Athirampuzha St.Marys Church.
